Grand Turk Lighthouse

Grand Turk Lighthouse, is located on Lighthouse Road, in of course, Grand Turk. If you go to the far northern end of the island, you can visit this lighthouse, along with the keeper's house.

We had the opportunity to visit this lighthouse shortly after a hurricane, while on a cruise shore excursion with Princess Cruise Lines. We were actually suppose to stop at 3 places, but 2 of the places were damaged, due to the hurricane, and we were only able to visit the lighthouse. Which was fine with me, because I collect lighthouses.

This lighthouse is one of the shorter lighthouses that I've seen, for it's only 60 ft. tall. It was built in 1852, and it's original lens, is now in the National Museum, located on the island. To guide vessels around a dangerous reef, the lighthouse is now powered by electricity, using a Fresnel lens to assist vessels with a much brighter light.

We took a tour bus to the location of the lighthouse, and the view from this lighthouse is spectacular. It's like no other that I've seen before. It has a cliff that drops down, and then goes straight out to the turquoise colored waters. We passed several wild horses along the way to the lighthouse. It's pretty far out there, compared to where the ship was docked.

If you ever get a chance to go to Grand Turk, make sure you include a visit to this lighthouse as part of your "To Do" list.
