Boca Grande Rear Range Lighthouse in Florida
The Boca Grande Rear Range Light, is also known as the Gasparilla Island Light. This lighthouse is still to this day, a navigational light for the mariners. It's partner lighthouse, the Boca Grande Lighthouse, also known as the Boca Grande Front Range Lighthouse, is also a navigational aid, and these 2 lighthouses work together to aid mariners.
The Rear Range Light has an interesting story behind it, for it didn't begin it's journey in Florida. It actually was built for Delaware, where it stood, overlooking Cape Henlopen, and guided vessels into the Delaware Bay.
When the shoreline started to change in Delaware, the lighthouse started to become threatened with corrosion, and it was disassembled, and taken to Miami, Florida, by railroad. This was back in 1921. Then 6 years later, it was re-assembled, and taken to Gasparilla Island, where it was put back together, and painted white. It took 5 years from that date, to get the lighthouse lit again, and it now stands to this day, protecting the vessels in the Gulf, in to the entry of Charlotte Harbor.
This light is 105 ft. tall, and is a conical structure made of steel. The light use to have a white flashing light, but now it has a white flashing light, with a red interruption light, that can be seen from 16 miles away, to indicate danger ahead. There are many buoys that are in the channel of Gasparilla Pass, to guide vessels into the dangerous channel, heading toward Charlotte Harbor.
To actually be standing at the lighthouse when the light is on, it appears that the lighthouse has just a regular light bulb in it. lol I remember driving by it one time, right before the sun set, and the light didn't seem that bright. I have a tendency to stay away from this area at night, for they say that this area has guests that have seen ghosts wandering around on the shoreline. It's not that I believe in ghosts, but I don't exactly don't believe in them either. :O
